Spotlight problems

Spotlight on modern macOS

Updated 2026-07-31 · 4 min read

Each macOS release moves the settings and occasionally the behaviour. Here is what changed and where things now live.

Settings moved

System Preferences became System Settings in Ventura. Spotlight's controls are now under Siri & Spotlight, and the Privacy exclusion list is a button at the bottom of that pane rather than a tab.

Many older guides still describe the tabbed layout, which is why the instructions do not match what you see.

What tends to break after an upgrade

The version-independent diagnostic

mdutil -s /
sudo mdutil -E /

Then check the exclusion list, then check the category checkboxes. That order resolves most cases regardless of version.

Sonoma and later specifics

Spotlight gained more Siri integration and web results, which increases the value of turning Siri Suggestions off if you want local file search to feel immediate.

The Data volume distinction also matters more:

mdutil -sV /System/Volumes/Data

Your files live on the Data volume; the boot volume is read-only. A status that looks contradictory between the two is normal.

When it is not Spotlight

If a specific file cannot be found, check whether it is in an excluded location before blaming the version — ~/Library, inside a package, or on an unmounted drive. Those have been excluded in every macOS version and are the likeliest explanation.

Common questions

Where is the Spotlight Privacy list in Ventura and later?

System Settings → Siri & Spotlight → Spotlight Privacy button at the bottom of the pane.

Does upgrading macOS reset Spotlight?

It generally triggers a full re-index. Settings are usually preserved.
