Search tips for a new Mac

Updated 2026-07-31 · 4 min read

Ten minutes of setup that saves an hour a month.

1. Show file extensions

Finder → Settings → Advanced → Show all filename extensions. Do this first.

2. Learn three shortcuts

⌘Space for Spotlight, ⌘F to search inside a Finder window, ⇧⌘G to jump to a typed path.

3. Space bar previews

Select any file and press Space. Arrow keys move through a selection while the preview stays open.

4. Enter renames, ⌘↓ opens

The opposite of Windows. This one catches everybody.

5. Search names, not contents

In a Finder search, click + and set the row to Name matches. Removes the content matches that make results feel random.

6. Sort Downloads by Date Added

Not Date Modified. Downloads keep their original modification date, so recent arrivals sort to the middle.

7. Reveal the Library folder

Hold Option and open Finder's Go menu. Half the files you cannot find are in there.

8. Make a Smart Folder

File → New Smart Folder → File Size greater than 1 GB → Save. Your storage answer, permanently.

9. Add a path bar

Finder → View → Show Path Bar. Knowing where you are prevents most "it disappeared" moments.

10. Know what search cannot see

Spotlight excludes ~/Library, the inside of packages such as your Photos library, and any drive that is not plugged in. When a file is genuinely missing, it is usually in one of those three — not gone.
